The Wessex Estate and Rail Corridor near Bloomsbury Residences

Across Portsdown Road from Bloomsbury Residences lies the Wessex estate, a hillside of colonial black-and-white houses among old trees, and beyond it the Rail Corridor. This guide looks at what is there and how the development borrows from it.

The Wessex Estate beside Bloomsbury Residences

Wessex is one of Singapore’s colonial estates: houses with white walls, dark timber and red-tiled roofs, built in the colonial era for British servicemen and their families, and now homes, studios and small businesses. The developer’s brochure calls it a scenic heritage estate within the one-north district, with ateliers, artists’ studios, schools, dining spots and green routes all under a ten-minute walk or bicycle ride.

Wessex Village Square, at the heart of the estate, is about 90 metres from the site in a straight line on OneMap, and Colbar, the colonial bar the brochure dates to the 1950s and describes as a former canteen for the British army, about 150 metres. The brochure also lists Under der Linden, in a conserved house, and Luss Restaurant & Bar each a minute’s walk away, and Cafe Melba at Mediapolis about four minutes.

How Bloomsbury Residences Borrows from Wessex

The developer describes its design as inspired by the black-and-white houses: deep eaves and pale frames on the pavilions of the deck, open verandas around the club lawn, and interiors it calls a modernised take on colonial design. Homes facing north look over the treetops and red roofs of the estate, and the roof garden of Block 61 has a viewing deck on that side.

The Rail Corridor near Bloomsbury Residences

The Rail Corridor follows the line of the former railway for 24 kilometres from the north of the island to the south, as a walking and cycling path and a green passage for wildlife, in the brochure’s words. Its access at Wessex is seven minutes’ walk from the development by the developer’s figure. Two community nodes along it are close: the Buona Vista community node, a 1.6-hectare gathering space with a community lawn and a sheltered plug-and-play area, about five minutes by bicycle, and the Queensway community node, which the brochure says will house exhibits and artefacts of the former Tanjong Pagar Railway Station and a plaza, with completion estimated in 2027.
